Causes of Hand Peeling Skin and How to Overcome It
Skin peeling off due to friction is normal and can be handled with simple steps. But in certain conditions that need to be aware of, peeling hand skin can be used as a marker for symptoms of serious illness.
As the outermost part of the body, from day to day the skin is exposed to many things, such as sunlight, wind, heat, humidity, to dryness. This exposure can cause repeated irritation which can cause the skin, including the skin, to peel.
Hand peeling skin, also called desquamation, naturally occurs when keratinocytes exfoliate unconsciously after more than two weeks. Normally this happens without us knowing. However, the skin can also exfoliate due to conditions that are too dry or too long in the sun. This condition can generally subside by itself or by treatment with over-the-counter products.
There are several things that can be done if the skin on the hands is not peeling from an illness.
- Apply sesame oil or wheat germ oil to the peeling skin area after the area is cleaned with water. Gently massage the peeling area. Both of these oils contain tocopherols, tocotrienols, and vitamin E which can moisturize the surface of the skin. Leave the oil for about an hour, then wash with water.
- Tea bag. Tea contains tanic acid catechins which help repair damaged skin. Apply the wet tea bag to the surface of the peeling hand skin until the tea content enters the pores of the skin and stimulates the growth of new skin cells.
- Some fruits contain cyanidin, pelargonidin, and anthocyanin which have antioxidant ingredients and enzymes to repair damaged protein in the skin. You can try rubbing pieces of fruit, like apples, bananas, strawberries, or blackberries on the skin of the peeling hands.
- Apply over-the-counter antibacterial ointment to handle hand peeling skin due to bacterial infection.
- Use sunscreen every six hours to help reduce the risk of sun damage on the skin of the hands that are peeling when outdoors activities.
